“Conventional mattresses made with polyurethane foam contain harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde and flame retardants,” says Tim Masters, Founder of My Green Mattress and Master Mattress Craftsman. “These toxins can cause headaches, prevent us from having a deep, restful sleep, and exasperate other allergies and chemical sensitivities.” To help you find the right mattress for your needs, we spent hours researching and testing some of the top eco-conscious options on the market. Our top pick, the Avocado Green Mattress, is made with organic and sustainable latex and offers hotel-like comfort. Ahead, our pick of organic mattresses for a guilt-free night’s sleep. In terms of certifications, the Avocado Green Mattress meets the gold standard. It’s constructed from organic materials with the gold standard of certifications, including layers of GOLS, eco-INSTITUT, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, FSC, and Rainforest Alliance-certified Dunlop latex, and organic wool, which acts as a natural fire retardant. The GOTS-certified organic cotton cover is moisture-wicking, letting you sleep cool. The hand-done needle tufting nixes the need to use any toxic adhesives in the mattress. Offering great edge support, the heavy-duty handles let you lug it around with relative ease. You can pick the standard medium-firm version, or go for the pricier pillow top version. You can also opt for paid white glove delivery to ensure this Made Safe-certified mattress is plopped right into your bedroom. Price at time of publish: $1,900 for a Queen The natural materials (cashmere, cotton, and wool) regulate temperature and wick away moisture, letting you sleep cool. Plus, the luxe mattress offers zoned lumbar support to ease achy joints and gives complete edge reinforcement so you can sleep securely and jump on and off with ease. If side sleepers find it a bit firm, you can add on Birch’s plush mattress topper. We love the small, elegant details on this option, such as the quilted organic cotton cover encasing the mattress, which has a beautifully textured matelassé woven finish. It’s a GOTS organic and GREENGUARD-Gold certified mattress fit for a king. Price at time of publish: $2,499 for a Queen The combination of buoyant single-origin latex, pressure-easing coils, and the right value makes it appealing. The moisture-wicking natural materials help you snooze cool, while the heat-treated coils help nix achy joints. It’s a good choice, especially for back or stomach sleepers, as the mattress is only available in medium and medium-firm levels of firmness. Price at time of publish: $999 for a Queen Offering strong edge-to-edge support, this mattress has a foam encasement allowing you to jump on and off the mattress easily without any sagging. We also love that Saatva offers complimentary white-glove delivery, setting up the mattress for you, and even taking your old one away, should you opt for it. With a 365-night sleep trial, you can snooze in comfort, stress-free. Price at time of publish: $1,595 for a Queen This mattress uses OEKO-TEX and GOLS-certified organic latex for the inner layers, OEKO-TEX and GOTS-certified organic wool in the batting, and GOTS-certified organic cotton for the circular knit covering. The result is an all-natural mattress with a healthy bounce, letting you move about easily. It’s a great option for side sleepers who toss about at night, supporting their hip and spine. If the mattress feels worn out, you can order another layer to replace the existing one at a 30% discount under their 25 Year Comfort Life program. Price at time of publish: $1,600 for a Queen Keeping you cool, dry, and comfortable, the mattress works for all sleep styles, with users describing it as soft with enough firmness. However, if you’re a fan of a cloud-like squishy feel, look elsewhere, since it comes in a single option of medium-firm. Awara is committed to sustainability and meets the certification standards of OEKO-TEX Standard 100, GREENGUARD Gold, Wools of New Zealand, and FSC. As a part of its green pledge, for every order, it plants trees in association with the non-profit Trees for the Future. If you’re undecided, Awara offers a generous, 365-day sleep trial, and will coordinate pickup and local disposal or donation in the rare case that the mattress isn’t a fit. Price at time of publish: $1,499 for a Queen Naturepedic’s classic organic crib mattress-lightweight with reinforced edges and a strong base is a great sleep option for your toddler. Fitting standard-size cribs, you can change the sheets struggle-free. Price at time of publish: Starts at $269 You can pick either the 2 or the 3-inch topper to elevate your sleep experience and improve the feel of a sinking, saggy mattress. The topper eases sore pressure points and reduces motion transfer caused by a fidgety partner. The latex is also flecked with pin holes during manufacturing, adding to the airflow and breathability, so you don’t wake up sweaty. To ensure rigorous safety in your home and its organic status, Brentwood Home’s topper is GOTS, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, eco-INSTITUT and GREENGUARD Gold certified. The company is Climate Neutral certified, meaning they strive to reduce their emissions (while offsetting the rest). Price at time of publish: $229 for a 2-inch Queen topper
Firmness
This is critical, as the right firmness plays a large role in how you sleep at night. “If your mattress is not supportive or firm enough—you will be at risk for backaches and poor sleep,” says Masters. Most mattress companies follow a 10-point scale, with 1 meaning extra soft, while a 9 or 10 translates to an extra-hard mattress with practically no sinkage. However, each mattress company typically defines firmness as per its own set criteria.
Thickness
Most mattresses today are between 10-15 inches thick—but according to Masters, if a mattress is too thin or too thick, it can cause a poor night’s sleep. “The mattress size is based on the sleeper’s preference and bedroom dimensions," he says. “Any mattress that is eight inches thick or thicker will support and contour to an adult body.” While back and stomach sleepers can consider an 8 to 12-inch thick mattress, side sleepers should look for thicknesses of 12 to 20 inches.
Certifications
When shopping for an organic mattress, you’ll want to look for reliable third-party certifications to ensure that the mattress you’re buying actually follows through on the company’s claims. “Choosing a certified organic certified mattress that is made without polyurethane foams, VOCs, and other toxins means you are choosing a mattress that is both healthy for you and better for the environment,” says Masters. Jillian Pritchard Cooke, Founder and CEO of Wellness Within Your Walls, recommends considering the following third-party certifications:
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard USDA Organic (US Department of Agriculture Organic) CertiPUR-US (meeting standards for content, emissions, and durability in foam) OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (tested and proven free of harmful levels of toxic substances) GREENGUARD Gold (certified for low VOC emissions) FSC (wood harvested from responsibly managed forests) Cradle-to-Cradle (safe, circular, and responsibly made) Rainforest Alliance (supports social, economic, and environmental concerns)
Warranty
As with any large purchase, when you’re buying an organic mattress, you’ll want to make sure that it has a sufficiently long warranty that will protect you if anything goes wrong with the mattress. “It is important to look for a mattress company with a warranty that covers it for up to 20 years,” says Masters. “A mattress that is built to last is more sustainable, meaning that fewer mattresses will wind up in a landfill over time.”
